The building that Oily's is situated in has been used as a public house for over 100 years, it has previously been know as the Royal Oak, and the Oily Johnnies Inn. Oily Johnnies was given its name after one of the pub's landlords, James Kirkpatrick, who used to sell paraffin oil from a shed adjacent to the pub - he was know locally as Oily Johnnie.
Following a major refurbishment, Chef patron Warwick Muir opened Oily's in June 2008 keeping part of the historic name alive. Since then it has built up a reputation as one of Cumbria's premier eateries. The food is classic British with a few Mediterranean elements. Warwick has worked in the industry since the age of 13 and had a varied career as a Chef. Prior to opening Oily's he was a Chef Lecturer at the local FE College.
